Sailing Experience

Like many Australians, my sailing experience started with racing in dinghies and skiffs. I have also extensively cruised the Queensland coast and Great Barrier Reef in small boats.

I then moved into multihull racing and participated in numerous offshore races along the Australian coastline. This culminated in building and racing our own Twiggy trimaran.

When have you launched your Globe 5.80 boat? If not yet, at what stage is your build?

We are awaiting the arrival of the kit from Denman Marine and are preparing our shed to start building as soon as it arrives.

Why do you want to compete in the MGR?

I have had an interest in short handed sailing, racing, small boats and John Guzzwell’s Trekka Round the World voyage since the 1980s. The G580T and MGR events present a very significant challenge and adventure that aligns with these interests. For me, building my own boat is an important part of
such a challenge and the Class Globe 580 and MGR fit in with this requirement.

What do you consider the best and worst parts about the MGR?

Best: The MGR enables a significant challenge and adventure that is financially and logistically achievable.

Worst: As an Australian, starting and finishing the MGR on the other side of the world presents significant financial and logistical challenges.
