Sailing Experience

In 1996 I took part in leg 2 of the BT Global Challenge. I sailed from Rio to Wellington NZ (5000nm). Since this race I’ve wanted to sail right round. I dinghy sail at my local club in a Laser, RS200, RS400. I also sailed on great lakes in US 2003 in a Tomas 35. For last 15 years or so I have sailed regularly with friends on the solent on a Westerly Fulmar and Sigma 38.

I’ve done the Round the Island race twice.

When have you launched your Globe 5.80 boat? If not yet, at what stage is your build?

I am yet to start the build. However, I may buy an existing boat (Numbatou) and re-name and re launch her according to new requirements.

Why do you want to compete in the MGR?

Since the 1996/97 BT Global Challenge I’ve wanted to sail right round (probably the right way). This has been a 30 year dream for me. Now I’m 55 and planning to retire at 60. The MGR 2029 is ideal for me regards this timing. The dream of building your own boat and sailing round the world also appeals. The route and places the MGR stops at sound amazing.

I’ve followed most of the sailors in the MGR 2025 and it’s been a real inspiration to hear their updates.

What do you consider the best and worst parts about the MGR?

Best parts are: The route, the camaraderie of the fleet, the stopover locations. Seeing some places I’m unlikely to see any other time in my life. The communications allowed (Starlink) and not losing contact with outside world. The boat is easy (ish) to manage but fully capable Transat to start!

Worst parts are: Probably the time it takes. 1 year is a long time but retiring to do the race seems a good way to manage this for myself. Being away from family and friends and the solitude is something I will have to manage. I am happy in my own company though and I believe I will be ok with these points. Having to have daily contact with my race manager will also help.
